If you have never done an online course before then the free Introduction To Sustainability course on the Coursera education platform starting 25th August 2014 may be the perfect course to jump in and find out why MOOC’s are rapidly gaining in popularity.
MOOC is an acronym for Massive Open Online Course with the ‘Open’ part meaning anyone can join for free, which leads to the ‘massive’ part – these on-line courses often get thousands of participants (sometimes tens of thousands). Sure, the completion rates are often low but many participants just want to access the materials for self education purposes so they often don’t complete all the optional activities that are encouraged and absolutely worthwhile if you have the time and inclination.
Coursera also offer a Statement Of Accomplishment Verified Certificate for this course – while participating in the course is totally free and you can choose to what level you wish to engage in the course, there is a cost involved to be certified as well as course requirements to be met.
The Introduction To Sustainability is run by Dr Jonathon Tomkin – an Australian who is the Associate Director, School of Earth, Society and Environment for the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign.
